The business of branded entertainment and product integration is big and getting bigger. An analysis of the role Microsoft's technology played in Wednesday's episode of "CSI: NY" emphasizes just how sophisticated this form of advertising has become.
For those who didn't see the show or read about it, here's a reminder of what happened:
The CSI detectives investigate a murder during a high-school prom.
They use Photosynth, software that stitches together images and creates a three-dimensional map, to re-create the scene of a murder. In this case, the raw material is cellphone photos taken by students at the dance, which the software uses to build a "synth" of the high-school gym at the time of the crime.
The photographic reconstruction, which receives major airtime in the episode, leads the investigators to a suspect.
Detective Don Flack, played by Eddie Cahill, confronts the suspect with the evidence from Photosynth and then says, "It's Microsoft's world, kid. I'm just living in it."
Rather neat article about the use of Photosynth software turning up on CSi !
Here are some interesting links for more info on Photosynth,
Interesting links, too.
I try to dig up the background as much as I can as that add's alot I feel. That stuff that Microsoft Lab's does is amazing.
That stuff that Microsoft Lab's does is amazing.
Agreed.
They have the coolest new building and some just amazing people. I would love to work at that place. The demo's those guys put on are hard to believe. Half the stuff people never see.
Gates is supposed to be a bit of an ogre. Still, I bet it IS an intriguing, mentally stimulating work environment.
I am not sure I would ever use the word "ogre" to describe Gates, he can be a bit hot-headed at times especially with younger programmers that don't know what they are doing, but since he got married to Melinda, I think she did alot of training and got rid of some of the rough edges from what I have seen, especially in the bad haircuts... I would say he is way more of the super enthusiastic, fervent or passionate type of person then anything. He width of knowledge is amazing and goes far beyond computers and to some people that scares them off because he has so many interests. To me, that is what I found always most interesting actually.
Microsoft Research was Bill's "Play Room" that he basically created, gave them whatever they wanted as far as money goes and gave them a few idea's and just them them go free. Many people had never heard of them until recently when they built a new building, they keep the entire group pretty low key.
Plus they do have a nice new shiny building about 1/2 mile from me. Not exactly a dump.. New Headquarters
The Research Group is almost a different company, they do some very unique thing, check out 'HD View' on the far right of this page for some neat graphics. Microsoft Research

You may be right, Tedd.
My statement is based on impressions solely drawn from hearsay.
I think you may be on target about Melinda's affect, too.
I think Melinda tended to mellow Bill out a bit and get him to focus a little more on his people skills (or lack of them,,,,) as she is a pretty quiet person herself and not so driven as Bill.
I saw this episode of CSI NY it was pretty cool what they did with the images from everybody's cell phones.
It is really cool software and great fun to play with I missed the CSI. I would like to see that. I will have to see if I can get a copy from Microsoft.
You need to change your name from rottlady to Ms. World of Facts. Thanks !
