A Deerfield Beach man who violently resisted arrest died in a hospital after officers zapped him with a Taser on Friday morning, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.
Officers drove an unconscious James Garland, 41, to Imperial Point Hospital in their marked patrol car after paramedics refused to treat him. They said he was too violent, even after he'd been shocked, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Jim Leljedal.
"When you have situation like this, when people are acting out, we expect to use at least some sort of force," Leljedal said
This is getting way way too much for me, this is now the third death in one week by a taser. And a taser is declared a "very effective safe alternative" ? I think not.
It may just be that every incident is now reported, but that is still a hell of a lot of people whose deaths could have been prevented.
It also is the fact that they have a new model they came out with and they have record number of sales of them, my guess is it will keep going up. And even more now that the general public can buy them at any sporting goods store, even with a build in MP3 player for $249 !

That's the key phrase here. Dude was asking for force to be used.
No question at all about the force needed, that was justified. Just that the taser is claimed to be a safe weapon is all.
We only have the word of the officers about how violent he was. They WILL lie.
Electro Shock is very complicated, and the energy waves received by the brain can alter the course of reactions as well as bodily functions.
I know of no non lethal WEAPONS.
Exactly..a weapon is just that. Electrical shock hitting the brain can cause all kinds of nasty reactions.
Never mid the brain -- the heart rhythm can be put off kilter. The heart can go into arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), tachycardia (too fast) or bradycardia (too slow). Any of them could lead to an untimely death days or months later if uncorrected.
If you are like me and you have had problems with seizures, believe me, the impulse to the brain is far more of a concern then a shock to the heart. A brain embolism is almost always fatal and a rapid increase in heart rate without the brain realizing the cause of the stimulus can cause that in a microsecond. A heart problem, you have some warning and time, not with the brain. A brains reaction time is far faster then a heart.
So violent that, according to the news story, paramedics on scene refused to treat him in their ambulance. And, he was a convicted child molestor.
What a fascinatingly moral individual.
Yeah, the guy did not sound like a nice guy..no question about that one.
Perhaps they knew about his record and chose to elevate the confrontation to justify using their little toy on him.
i find the taser deaths disturbing but the simple fact is you get violent with the cops you got a good chance of getting tased or wacked. those cops have a tough job I don't blame them in this incident.
every week we see some loser pull a weapon on a cop and then gets shot. i have no sympathy for anyone pulling a weapon on a cop and getting blown away.
Maybe not, but a tool that is claimed safe for use, should not be causing people to die from its use, the cop could have used Pepper Spray or a baton.

So you're saying that you're analysis of the continuum of force is superior to the police officer's analysis of the continuum of force? Considering they were there, and it's their profession to handle situations exactly such as this one, I can't imagine how I would take your analysis over theirs.
cop could have used
No, your taking what I said way out of context. One I am not in the force, so I have no background to speak on the matter. Two, more important, I was not there. Three. I used the word could only as a opinion, or a maybe.
I in no way would analyze something that I am not qualified for. I would state a opinion and that is all it was,
Sorry for the miscommunication. I don't work in the criminal justice system like you do so that is out of my field. My profession is Telecommunications Engineering.
