Teenager Dies After Police In Charlotte Use Taser

advertisement

A teenager died after police used a Taser on him inside a grocery store in northeast Charlotte.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police homicide detectives said they will investigate why police used the Taser on 17-year-old Darryl Turner Thursday afternoon.
His mother, Tammi Fontenot, told Eyewitness News, "I want answers. I want to know why. I just want to know why."

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

It is our pervasive culture of violence that allows police to use excessive force in situations where it is not warranted. This victim was a minor and even if he posed a threat, he could have been subdued by conventional methods. Just because officers are trained and given weapons doesn't mean that they are to be used on unarmed civilians.

It seems that police are using Tasers when they could have been talking, but decide to take the easy way out, this makes me sick to see this happen especially when this young man had his entire life ahead of him.

Hey you guys! Thanks for talking good about me behind my back! :)

I'm building and moving one of my sites and frankly, I needed a break from this taser-crap. [So I wrote some Newsvine articles in the interim as well, concentrating in a different venue.] There is only so much I can take and THIS one...THIS one here. Dammit! Every day it's getting worse and at the same time, more acceptable to read deaths by taser.

I am increasingly frustrated that no one save a few can see this naked emperor.

It's spun and it's lied about and it's covered up and it's bought. Bought and paid for by the taser companies. And on the same side, cops whose jobs have been made easier by the taser. The fact that society -as a whole - has not become outraged at these deaths is a simple shift in mentality that I've been noticing...

This us vs them. This "guilty until proven innocent" and thus, so what if the guilty die?

Nothing I can say right now can convey my very real and pervasive anger over what is going on. And I mean by society's accepting of it and defending it at times, as well as the corporate interests of the taser companies being in direct antagonism toward human rights yet WINNING.

This is no longer America.
This is Amerika.

At least Canada investigates their taser deaths.

Look at the petition #112 signature. Heck, glance a few below that. Read some of those stories.

[Not to mention my disheartened feeling over a lousy number of signatures.] An internet media guy was *interested* in the Taser petition but he'd need to know my real name? I think right the hell not.

Anyway. I'll be back. :)

DIGITS!!!!! My sister from another mother!

Yeah, this @!$%# is getting way out of hand. I remember when the old "less lethal" weapons (night sticks) were used, there was actual scrutiny. A long time ago there was this little known story of a man named Rodney King who got "stunned" a few times, and it started riots. Now people, kids even, can be tasered and people just go "Well, if he had nothing to hide.....etc etc". It's sick.

The American people have become nothing more than helpless sheep who waste away in front of the TV. Who give more credibility to 24 and American Idol than they do their fellow countrymen who question authority, and they let these militarized pseudo-police do whatever they want. It's like if a man wears a uniform, anything he does is justified until further notice.

My advice to everyone: wake up everyday and taser yourself. Increase the dosage week by week. Soon you will immune..... well, it works with poison.

I hate to ever disagree with anyone especially on my column as my basic view on life is somewhat of a left over from early High School days so I would much rather "Make Love, not War"

But your idea takes weeks and does use a large amount of power that comes out of your energy bill.

Would it not be easier to take the person that using the Taser incorrectly and just stick his finger in a wall socket for a few moments ? My guess is that would give him a idea how it feels :-)

Yes I tried that theory of gradual increments. When I was a boy I lifted a calf over a fence every day until one day I could lift a full grown cow over the fence. I gave it up though when somebody pointed out we were running out of cows.
I figure sooner or later we will see a story about a man attacking a cop because of a fear of being tasered.

There have been several hundred deaths caused by tasers actually. Yes this is in all the mainstream media. We have a whole group called "Taser-Watch" just devoted to keeping a eye on taser abuse.

Last count I think was 16 deaths in Canada and about 260 in the US.

It would be interesting to get statistics on deaths by tasers vs deaths by say police batons. I think part of what makes the taser so deadly is that police are convinced that it is non-lethal where as with a baton they have a better image of what damage they are doing. They might be reluctant to strike an older person with a baton but they have no such compunction with a taser.

I agree. They know exactly how much damage a baton or a gun will do as you can see the evidence in plan sight and its something that they have all seen for years and it effects everyone the same. However with a Taser, its a whole different story, no two are the same and they are at the bottom of the learning curve with them and again, if the person is frail, older, has seizures or a weak heart, then no telling what might happen.

I read somewhere recently that if you look at the backgrounds of a lot of cops now, they are coming direct from the military or even special-ops departments of the military.
They are not really trained at all in people management, just basically in weapons deployment. I am told that you can look up a town's police dept and click on that, they will have profiles of officers and you can see what their backgrounds are. It is not always closely held info, like where they won't even give out the names, photos, etc.
Am very sorry for this mom. It would be bad enough if he had been killed in Iraq/Afghanistan, and he was almost old enough for that. But this is so senseless.

That is all true. Many older cops are military. Not so much with the younger ones. Many areas even have rating systems on cops, bad and good and pictures including salaries. Cops hate it. Some towns allow it, some don't. We had one that even gave out their home address and phone numbers. That one was pulled down as a invasion of privacy. Its different all over the place.

There is a woman that comment on one of my Taser articles, I think her name was Katy ? Somehow she has collected the names of all the Taser death victims in the US. I don't know how she got hold of that, must have been a ton of work I think she has close to 300 names. She was looking for more details on a few guys from New Mexico from 2006. But yeah, this is nuts, last week was depressing, I had 3 seeds and all were Taser deaths. I skipped a few this week, it just gets too much some times.

The problem is they slip thru every crack in the system. They are not considered firearms, so they are not regulated nor tested by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, yet neither are they food or medical based like a defibrillator so they miss also all the testing by the FDA, FCC, UL and a pile of other Government agencies. They are in about the same category as a BB-gun.

Most states (Except for NY and DC) you can walk into your local sporting goods store and for a $15.00 application fee, walk out with one. And they are used far too often when talking would work just fine.

I am sure their are times when the taser is the best device to use. The problem comes when they are used indescriminately or incorrectly. This nonsense will not end until the police departments start taking legal action. Think how that officer must feel. They are human beings too and have to live with the knowledge that they have taken a life, in this case that of a child.

Trained to kill due the the "War on Drugs." (Read as Highly Armed Drug Gangs, which they were/ are) Then subsequently trained to be highly vigilant for the Terroristas. And now intensely reactive due to the apparent order to use any means necessary to "keep the apparent peace." Yet, due to all their training, every situation with an ordinary, "I know my rights," type person escalates into some mindless violent interaction; the threat or apparent threat of violence escalates every situation. So what you have here is people who are used to pulling guns, now armed with newer more subtle weapons; hard to know what's happening to someone when you induce a massive seizure in them...Much easier to put a cap in that ass and see if they live, at least "typically" one would know the results, cough at the cynicism. Thankfully in my state of Michigan they still would rather excessively fill your body with bullets. So all you kids out there with all that rage, take that into consideration the next time a cop has a gun pointed at you, or is about to whoop on you with a club, or suddenly pulls out that futuristic looking thing. Being threatened with some nearly unknown device, not so commanding. What they need are the things the guards in the film Tron had, similar concept and result, but vastly more threatening and hence commanding. I wonder how many people would be disruptive if the po po walked around with giant glowing red stun spears. Albeit I am still unnerved in the presence of anyone that is obviously carrying a gun. Anyway just a rapidly written rant on the whole, damn Tasers thing...
I was maced once by a Michigan State Trooper, directly in my eyes, not so much fun, but I lived!

Maybe it comes down to the national leadership example of "If I think I might be in danger, attack with deadly force" i.e. Iraq. Don't talk, react.

Yeah, just follow that great leadership example that we have set for the world. Shot first, ask questions later....Works just great.. Look at how well Blackwater USA does...

I think Tedd and luckydog have hit some nails on the head. Not for the first time, either.

Tedd and luckydog, you are both 100% right, and I was just thinking the same thing. Like everything else that has tanked in our world since Dubya took over his dictatorship, this is one more thing...

How did we not manage to impeach him before now? I guess we were all afraid of being stuck with Pres. Cheney... :-/

Speaking of shooting first and looking later Cheney is the perfect example. He is so mean he shoots his friends so you can imagine what he does to his enemies.

I was reading an editorial in the Greensboro paper yesterday about this story. It was obvious to me that the person writing the story, while outraged, had no idea how widespread 'death by taser' is. I think it's becoming important that the story of the sheer number of taser related deaths be disseminated to a wider audience. The problem is, no one had tased, Obama, Clinton or McCain's kids.

In almost every story that I have read, that is the exact same feeling I get. The writer is assuming this is the first time this has ever happened. I have received about 20 emails since starting to seed all these Taser articles from smaller newspapers writers and they all say the same thing, they had no idea what they were getting into when they wrote their article and find out its just one of hundreds.
